SGS College welcomed Thornbury and Yate Liberal Democrat MP Claire Young to its Filton Campus on Friday 1 May 2026 for a visit focused on skills development, future careers, learner experience and ongoing improvements within Construction provision.

During her visit, Claire Young toured the Construction department, where discussions took place around condition improvement works and the importance of providing high-quality facilities that reflect industry standards and support learner progression.

The MP also met with construction apprentices, the Construction Head of Department and T Level learners from Health and Social Care, as well as Digital Data and Analytics. The session provided an opportunity for learners to share their experiences of studying at SGS College and to discuss their journeys from school into further education, apprenticeships and industry work placements.

Claire Young spoke with learners about the process of finding apprenticeships locally, the teaching and support they receive at SGS College, and how industry work placements form a key part of the T Level experience, helping students develop workplace skills and prepare for future careers.

Conversations also explored SGS College's relationships with local employers and how these partnerships support learner progression, including opportunities linked to T Level industry placements and apprenticeships within the construction sector.

"I was very impressed with the students I met during my visit to SGS's Filton Campus. They were very clear about what they wanted to achieve and how SGS College is helping them as they start out on their careers."
