Course content

You will develop a practical understanding of bookkeeping, including:

  • Introduction to double-entry bookkeeping and related documents
  • Managing sales, purchases, payments, and receipts
  • Using control accounts, journals, and reconciliation processes
  • Producing accurate trial balances and understanding their role in financial statements

The syllabus is designed to prepare you for real-world accounting in sole trader and partnership contexts.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
Classes are held for 3 hours per week over 17 weeks, combining teacher demonstrations, group work, and hands-on exercises. You will also dedicate around 2 hours per week to self-study. Assessment involves two online exams, each lasting 90 minutes, featuring a mix of multiple-choice and calculation questions. There is no coursework.
What do I need to join (Entry Requirements)
This course welcomes those with little or no prior accounting experience. While a Level 2 Maths qualification (GCSE grade A-C or equivalent) and good general education are recommended, they are not mandatory. Enrollment requires a successful interview and assessment to ensure readiness. You do not need to be currently employed in accounting.

Registration with the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) is required, and exam fees for one attempt per paper are included in the course cost. On successful completion, you can progress to the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting and further advance to Level 4 Professional Accounting qualifications.
