This Level 3 study programme introduces you to the world of sports journalism, which comprises a set of disciplines within the media industry that has greatly expanded in recent years, leading to a huge increase in outlets for creating content about sport. This course will see you acting as a sports correspondent within our renowned sports academy set-up, producing media for all platforms, from television to radio, print to online. Through this course you'll be able to use a variety of video and audio recording equipment, interview emerging sports stars, take press photographs and create material for the internet, including podcasts and documentaries. You will study the skills needed to function effectively as a journalist, including how to write for different audiences, how to operate video cameras and sound recording equipment, how to carry out interviews, how to design websites and take photographs and how to provide match commentary. This Level 3 course is based at our dynamic and exciting WISE Campus, located within easy reach of the city of Bristol and moments away from Bristol Parkway and Bristol Abbey Wood train stations.
A key requirement for obtaining many jobs is to achieve a good standard of English and Maths. Therefore, learners that do not yet have a GCSE grade C in these subjects will be enrolled on either GCSE or Functional Skills programmes alongside their main study programme.
To join this course, applicants must have either:
Five or more GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including at least one in English or Maths
Or
A relevant Level 2 Diploma, plus at least one GCSE at grade 4/C in English or Maths.
Applicants should also have a keen interest in the subject, be committed and punctual, and show enthusiasm for learning new skills.
Applicants will be invited to an interview and will be invited to bring in a portfolio and/or undertake an interview task, more details of which will be found in our interview invitation.
You can progress onto one of the growing number of degrees in sports journalism, or onto a general journalism degree or other media course. You can also enter the industry at entry level, with a view to working your way up. You can progress onto our degree and university courses within the School of Creative Industries.
Sports academies are available only to applicants aged 16-18.
