Turn your passion for sport into a creative career with this two-year Level 3 Sports Media course. You’ll get the chance to work with professional sports teams, athletes, broadcasters and organisations to develop the practical and creative skills needed to thrive in the media industry.
Through this course, you will gain hands-on experience with interviews, video and audio equipment, content editing, match commentaries, feature writing, live productions and sports documentaries. You’ll develop journalistic skills, learning to write, report and communicate effectively to different audiences. Students also benefit from unique opportunities such as attending inter-class football games, visiting the BBC and Principality Stadium and taking part in a residential trip abroad in the second year.
Taught by experienced media professionals who understand industry standards and practices, you’ll be supported to achieve. Alongside your creative development, you’ll receive wellbeing support and tailored advice to help you prepare for university or a career in the sports and media industries.
On this vocational course, focused on developing your practical and professional skills, you can expect to:
A key requirement for future progression and employment is a good understanding and application of knowledge and skills in both English and Maths.
Learners who are enrolled on this course that do not possess a grade 4 in English or Maths will also, as part of their overall programme of study, be enrolled on a GCSE English and/or Maths programme in order to progress towards gaining a GCSE grade 4 in both subjects.
The media industry is one of the few areas in the jobs market that has seen sustained levels of employment and even shown areas of growth in the present economic climate.
To join this course, applicants must have either:
Five or more GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including at least one in English or Maths
Or
A relevant Level 2 Diploma, plus at least one GCSE at grade 4/C in English or Maths.
Applicants should also have a keen interest in the subject, be committed and punctual, and show enthusiasm for learning new skills.
Applicants will be invited to an interview and will be invited to bring in a portfolio and/or undertake an interview task, more details of which will be found in our interview invitation.
You can progress onto one of the growing number of degrees in sports journalism, or onto a general journalism degree or other media course. You can also enter the industry at entry level, with a view to working your way up. You can progress onto our degree and university courses within the School of Creative Industries.
Sports academies are available only to applicants aged 16-18.
