This two-year, full-time vocational course will equip you with a variety of practical media production skills and an in-depth understanding of the UK Film and Television Industry. Designed to prepare you for a successful career in moving image, the course provides hands-on experience across all key areas of production.
You’ll build confidence and technical expertise in directing, producing, camera operation, editing, animation, lighting, sound recording and post-production. This course is delivered by experienced tutors who are actively engaged in the industry, ensuring your learning reflects current professional practice.
By the end of the course, you will have produced a portfolio of your own short films, TV pilots and documentaries. You'll be encouraged to shape your portfolio around your individual career ambitions, ensuring that your work supports your next steps in higher education or employment.
You’ll have access to cutting-edge equipment, including DSLRs, cinema cameras, professional audio and lighting kits and grip gear. As a Film and TV student, you could also benefit from work placements within Bristol’s thriving media industry, with opportunities for one-to-one on-set experience supported by tutors.

A key requirement for future progression and employment is a good understanding and application of knowledge and skills in both English and Maths.
Learners who are enrolled on this course that do not possess a grade 4 in English or Maths will also, as part of their overall programme of study, be enrolled on a GCSE English and/or Maths programme in order to progress towards gaining a GCSE grade 4 in both subjects.
There is a strong focus on industry practice and learning how the TV and film industry works in the UK. All students complete a 36-hour work placement each year. In the first year, you will work with others to produce a promotional/corporate film for an external client, while in the second year you will negotiate your own placement, or participate in a selection process for placements with some of the country's top media employers, such as ITV West and Films@59.
You will be offered the chance to get involved in external schemes, such as the Bristol BFI Film Academy and BBC Talent Ticket, as well as the opportunity to participate in TV production experience within the College.
To join this course, applicants must have either:
Five or more GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including at least one in English or Maths
Or
A relevant Level 2 Diploma, plus at least one GCSE at grade 4/C in English or Maths.
Applicants should also have a keen interest in the subject, be committed and punctual, and show enthusiasm for learning new skills.
Applicants will be invited to an interview and will be invited to bring in a portfolio and/or undertake an interview task, more details of which will be found in our interview invitation.
Sports academies are available only to applicants aged 16-18.
