About the course

Step into the world of Animation and Visual Effects with this two-year course. This vocational course equips you with diverse creative, technical and professional skills needed to thrive in the fast-moving animation and VFX sector within the creative industries.

You’ll learn directly from experienced industry practitioners, including former Aardman employees, bringing real-world insight, studio expertise and industry standards into your learning experience. You will learn to experiment with animation forms including 2D, 3D and stop-motion using industry-standard tools and software.

With a strong emphasis on industry practice, collaboration and hands-on learning, you’ll also take part in an industry placement where you’ll work with professional animation companies. For your Final Major Project, you’ll be given the opportunity to develop your own passion piece that showcases your interests and strengths and prepares you for employment or further study.

Course content
  • Build essential, creative and technical skills necessary to succeed in the animation and VFX industries
  • Explore a wide range of career pathways within the UK animation and VFX sectors
  • Learn real industry practices from experienced specialists and former Aardman professionals
  • Gain hands-on experience through an industry placement with professional studios
  • Experiment with multiple animation forms, including 2D, 3D and stop-motion
  • Become confident using industry-standard tools such as Maya, Blender, Dragonframe and Adobe Suite
  • Produce an ambitious Final Major Project aligned with your interests and career goals
Maths & English
A key requirement for future progression and employment is a good understanding and application of knowledge and skills in both English and Maths. Learners who are enrolled on this course that do not possess a grade 4 in English or Maths will also, as part of their overall programme of study, be enrolled on a GCSE English and/or Maths programme in order to progress towards gaining a GCSE grade 4 in both subjects.
What do I need to join

To join this course, applicants must have either:

Five or more GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including at least one in English or Maths

Or

A relevant Level 2 Diploma, plus at least one GCSE at grade 4/C in English or Maths.

Applicants should also have a keen interest in the subject, be committed and punctual, and show enthusiasm for learning new skills.

Applicants will be invited to an interview and will be invited to bring in a portfolio and/or undertake an interview task, more details of which will be found in our interview invitation.

What can I do next
It is expected that students from this course will be suitably prepared for entry-level employment within the creative industries, though most will progress onto the BA (Hons) Degree in Animation and/or VFX and move into working life from there.
