About the course

If you love games and want to learn how they’re made, this hands-on course is the perfect place to begin. Designed for learners aged 14 and above (including 16+), you’ll explore game art, programming, and animation while building the creative and technical skills you need for a future in the games industry.

Course content

You’ll develop your confidence and creativity in a positive, vibrant environment that feels very different from school. Through fun, practical projects, you’ll learn about game design, audiences, and production while creating your own 2D computer games.

What you’ll learn

  • Create digital and concept art
  • Learn the fundamentals of programming
  • Design and build your own 2D games
  • Explore research and development techniques

Final project:Your final project brings everything together - simulating the fast-paced world of a real games studio and preparing you for progression to Level 2 Games Design or other creative courses.

You’ll also work towards improving your English and maths to support your future study and career goals.

What do I need to join

As well as having a keen interest in the subject area, learners will need to be committed, punctual and demonstrate an enthusiasm for learning and taking on new ideas and skills.

Pre-16 do not need any qualifications but a portfolio of recent work to show at Taster Day

or

16+ years old and at least an English or Maths GCSE at grade 2 or above (or Functional Skill Entry Level 3 or above) plus a portfolio of recent work to show at Taster Day

What can I do next

Move on to Level 2 Games Design or other creative pathways such as Media or Art & Design. With further study, you could pursue roles as a games designer, animator, concept artist, or programmer in the growing digital and creative industries.

Additional information

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded a UAL Level 1 Diploma in Art, Design and Media

This nationally recognised qualification provides a strong foundation in creative and digital skills and is worth a total of 72 credits, which is roughly equivalent to two GCSEs.
