About the course

Children often test their parents' patience as they develop independence, which can be challenging but usually passes. Distressed behaviour, however, is more lasting and can include anger, attention problems, abuse, social withdrawal, self-harm or harming others. This behaviour can have many causes and, if not addressed, may lead to mental health issues later on.

This course covers the causes of distressed behaviour, including how mental health, learning disabilities and autism can contribute. It also looks at UK laws supporting the management of distressed behaviour in children.

The course is ideal for anyone interested in understanding distressed behaviour in children, especially for those pursuing a career where this knowledge is important.

The course includes six units:

  • Awareness of Distressed Behaviour: Learn what distressed behaviour is, who it affects, how it’s assessed, and its impact.
  • Principles of Intervention: Discover strategies to support children, how to record incidents, and when physical intervention is needed.
  • Distressed Behaviour and Mental Health: Understand mental health conditions and how to help children with mental health issues showing distressed behaviour.
  • Distressed Behaviour and Learning Disabilities: Learn about learning disabilities and how to support children with these conditions showing distressed behaviour.
  • Distressed Behaviour, Sensory Processing, and Autism: Explore sensory processing conditions and autism, and how to support affected children.
  • Legislation and Guidance: Understand UK laws regarding distressed behaviour and how they protect children’s rights.

This is a fully online course, with access to an online portfolio after completing the initial assessment.
