About the course

The Gateway Level 2 Award in Mobile App Development is designed for learners who want to develop their knowledge and practical skills in creating mobile applications. Building on basic digital and programming skills, this course introduces how mobile apps are designed, developed, and used, providing a strong foundation for further study in digital and technology related subjects.

Course content

Learners will develop an understanding of mobile app development through practical, hands-on activities, including:

  • Exploring the features and uses of mobile applications
  • Planning and designing a mobile app for a defined purpose and audience
  • Developing a mobile application in line with a design specification
  • Testing, evaluating, and refining a mobile app
How is the course delivered and assessed?

This course is delivered through a blended learning approach, combining:

  • Practical workshops in modern, fully equipped IT suites based at our Filton campus
  • Online learning activities
  • Supported independent study

Assessment is through a Portfolio of Evidence, based on practical tasks and projects completed throughout the course.

What do I need to join

Learners should have:

  • A Level 1 qualification in programming or digital skills, or
  • The ability to demonstrate equivalent foundational knowledge of programming and digital technologies

On successful completion, learners can progress to:

  • Level 3 qualifications in software development, app development, digital product design, or wider IT and digital technologies
  • Apprenticeships in IT or software-related roles
