About the course

The Expressive Writing course offers a welcoming, relaxed and supportive environment where students engage using a variety of materials to learn new creative skills and work towards a Tailored Learning Outcome. By the end of the course, students will have progressed or worked towards their set goal, gain a deeper understanding of how Writing and creativity contribute to wellbeing, improve confidence and gain a greater knowledge of materials, techniques and processes. The course will support with health and wellbeing benefits as well as offering many other opportunities including progression and support into further learning, skills for employment including building confidence to overcome health-related barriers to employment, access and support with essential skills in line with our funding criteria.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
There are no formal assessments. >P> Students will work towards a personal Tailored Learning Outcome regarding their physical health, mental health and developing stronger communities. During the beginning of the course, the tutor will spend 1:1 time with students to determine which learning outcome they would like to work towards.

The course will support with health and wellbeing benefits as well as offering many other opportunities including progression and support into further learning, skills for employment including building confidence to overcome health-related barriers to employment, access and support with essential skills in line with our funding criteria. In this course, you will engage with open-ended strategies for your poetry and prose to produce pieces of work that are unique to you. Our courses offer many other opportunities including progression and support into further learning, skills for employment including building confidence to overcome health-related barriers to employment, access and support with essential skills and those who wish to turn their creativity into a career or progression into a qualification. Students will work towards a Tailored Learning Outcome and by the end of the course, students will have progressed or worked towards their set goal, gain a deeper understanding of how the course can contribute to softer transferable skills. The course will offer many other opportunities including progression and support into further learning, skills for employment including building confidence to overcome health-related barriers to employment, access and support with essential skills in line with our funding criteria.

About the tutor
Ronnie McGrath is an established poet and writer with numerous publications to his name. He is a graduate of Manchester University’s MA in Novel Writing and as a former musician, he has toured Europe and performed for the Queen when he opened the Commonwealth Games in Canada. As well as being a former course director of Creative Writing at the University of the Arts, London, Ronnie is an associate Creative Writing lecturer at Bath Spa University and Imperial College London. In addition to teaching poetry, fiction, and memoir writing for publication, he has used creative writing as a therapeutic tool, delivering workshops in prisons, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres, and for pain and well-being participants in and around Gloucestershire.
What do I need to join (Entry Requirements)
Applicants must be at least 19 years old at the start of the academic year. You don’t need to have any art experience to join this course.>P> We kindly ask that you try to attend each week for the duration of the course to get the most out of the experience. Your regular participation will help you fully benefit from the activities, learning and achieving your goal set out from the Tailored Learning Outcomes. >P> These courses are also available for self-referring or referred patient/client.

If you have a support worker or have a condition, we will need to be aware of, please let us know – there may be other specialised creative courses that are more suited to your needs from other health providers. The tutor will spend some time with you 1:1 to support you with your declared needs to ensure we give you the best support and guidance during the course.

These courses are delivered under the government Tailored Learning Scheme. They are limited to one Wellbeing course per term (excluding online)

    The courses are part-funded and therefore means / benefit tested, and fees may still apply. Below is our sliding scale table of tiered costings depending on your financial situation. All of these costs are at the part-funded price.

      Subject to means / benefit tested, fees could be reduced to one of the following tiers:

      • Tier 1 - £10 materials (£20 stained glass)

      • Income under £20,319 (Gloucestershire) £23,400 (Bristol area)

      • Benefits - Universal Credit (UC) * Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).

        • Tier 2 - £40 (£50 stained glass)

        • Income – under £27,000 (Gloucestershire and Bristol)

        • Benefits - Universal Credit (UC) **, Carer’s Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), State Pension, Attendance Allowance and food bank voucher.

          • Tier 3 - £50 (£60 stained glass)

            • Income – Between £27,000 and £30,000

              • Tier 4 - £75 (£85 stained glass)

              • Income – Over £30,000

                • *UC Cap for Tier 1 for a sole claim £617per month and for a joint claim £988.
                • **UC Cap Tier 2 for a sole claim £817per month and for a joint claim £1188.LI
