Feeling overwhelmed, anxious or low? You're not alone. At Stroud School of Art, we believe creativity can offer calm, comfort, and a powerful pathway to wellbeing. This gentle, part-time course invites you to explore textile craft through print and pattern-making while supporting your mental health in a calm, inclusive space. Whether you’re reconnecting with your creativity or trying something new, you’ll discover how engaging in the arts can help you feel more grounded, positive, and inspired.

Course content

You will learn a variety of textile-based techniques, with a focus on print and pattern development. Each week introduces a new skill, allowing you to explore areas such as:

  • Basic colour theory
  • Block and mono printing
  • Pattern repeats and layout
  • Freehand textile design
  • Experimentation with textures and surfaces

You’ll create your own prints and patterns, building confidence, curiosity, and the freedom to work at your own pace. This is a safe and welcoming environment where there’s no pressure-just time to create and connect.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
This course is delivered through a combination of tutor-led workshops, hands-on tasks, individual practice, and relaxed group activities. During your first session, your tutor will offer a one-to-one conversation to understand how best to support you and your needs. There are no formal assessments - this course is about personal growth, confidence, and wellbeing.
What do I need to join (Entry Requirements)
Applicants must be aged 19 or over at the start of the academic year. No previous experience in textile arts is needed - just an open mind and a willingness to explore creativity as a tool for self-expression and wellbeing.
Additional information
This course is open to all adults, including self-referring or referred individuals. It is especially suitable for those experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, bereavement, or other mental health and behavioural conditions. If you have a support worker or a condition we need to be aware of, please inform us when enrolling—there may also be other creative wellbeing courses more suited to your needs. This course may act as a first step back into learning, education, or future creative pathways. Come as you are - no pressure, no judgement - just the opportunity to make, reflect, and connect.
