This qualification is designed for individuals seeking a career as a plumber or heating engineer in the building services industry. The programme offers comprehensive training in both plumbing and heating systems, covering essential aspects of installation, maintenance and repair. You will gain hands-on experience with various materials and technologies used in plumbing and heating, while also learning about industry standards and safety regulations to ensure compliance and effective practice.

This Level 2 qualification is a one-year course for those who wish to work towards being a plumber or heating engineer in the building services industry.

You will study the following mandatory content:

    Hot Water Cold Water Sanitation Central Heating Health & Safety Common Plumbing Processes Electrical Scientific Principles Communications As well as having a keen interest in the subject area learners will need to possess GCSE grade 4 and 4 in Maths and English. Ideally learners will have completed a level 1 qualification in a related field, or be able to demonstrate knowledge of the trade and complete a skill assessment. Learners will need to be committed, punctual and demonstrate an enthusiasm for learning and take in on new ideas and skills. A Key requirement for future progression and employment is a good understanding and application of knowledge and skills in English and Maths.

As part of this Technical Certificate, you will study essential areas including hot water systems, cold water systems, sanitation and central heating. The course also includes practical training through work experience and employer-led projects.

To achieve this qualification, you must complete one externally set and moderated practical assignment, pass one externally set and marked exam under formal conditions and meet the employer involvement requirement.

What do I need to Join?

In addition to having a strong interest in the subject area, you need to have at least a GCSE grade 4 in both English and Maths. You should be committed, punctual and enthusiastic about learning and adopting new ideas and skills.

What can I do next
Upon successfully completing this course, you can move on to a Level 3 course in a related discipline or opt for an apprenticeship to gain practical experience and further enhance your skills. There are numerous specialist roles within the construction industry, and employers typically seek candidates with at least a Level 2 NVQ or an equivalent apprenticeship. Opportunities in the building services sector include roles in plumbing, refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilation, and renewable technologies. You might also find employment as a plumber's mate, assisting experienced plumbers with various tasks.
