About the course

Gain an industry-recognised qualification in painting and decorating while working in your current role. This workplace-based NVQ allows you to demonstrate your skills on real projects, building a portfolio of evidence with guidance from an experienced assessor.

Course content

You will be guided to demonstrate competency across a range of practical skills, including:

  • Preparing and protecting surfaces for decorating

  • Applying paints and coatings using brushes and rollers

  • Working safely on-site and following health and safety procedures

  • Using access equipment, including ladders and scaffold towers

  • Handling, storing, and moving materials correctly

  • Maintaining a clean and organised work area

  • Working effectively with others and contributing to team productivity

An initial assessment and skills scan will be completed to ensure you have the potential to gain the qualification successfully. Throughout the course, you will work alongside an industry expert who will support your learning and assessment in the workplace.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
This qualification is entirely workplace-based. You will be assessed on-site by a qualified industry assessor who will review your practical skills and compile a portfolio of evidence for each unit. Your portfolio will include multiple pieces of work demonstrating your knowledge, skills, and competency against the National Occupational Standards.
What do I need to join (Entry Requirements)
This course is suitable for adults currently employed in the construction sector, specifically in painting and decorating. No prior formal qualifications are required, but relevant work experience and competence in painting and decorating tasks are essential.
