About the course

Through this 3 day workshop you will immerse yourself in the fascinating world of medieval encaustic tile making. In this fun and experimental workshop led by artist Phil Root you will get to explore both traditional and modern methods of producing these remarkable tiles that were highly sought-after between the 14th and 16th centuries. Join us as we revive this ancient art form and create your own unique designs using a combination of techniques. Over three days we will explore tile making from a traditional point of view. Starting with the medieval encaustic method of inlaying white slip into a red clay body. We will also explore how this method can be applied to modern ways of working with mark making, inlay techniques and slip decoration. We'll delve into the concepts of tessellation and repeatability in design, enabling you to create intricate and visually stunning compositions. Throughout the workshop, you'll be encouraged to experiment with your designs and techniques, infusing contemporary symbols into your creations!

Under the expert guidance of Phil Root, you'll embark on a creative journey, learning the techniques of medieval encaustic tile making. Through hands on lessons and creative demonstrations in sessions. You will be supported by the tutor in creating your own ideas and provided ideas to follow and adapt.
