About the course

This course provides a practical introduction to contemporary ceramics and is designed as a preparation for the UAL Level 2 Art & Design programme. You will develop your creative and technical skills while exploring ceramic processes in a supportive studio environment. Through workshops, discussions and independent project work, you will begin building a portfolio and gain an understanding of the expectations for progression to a Level 2 Award or Diploma.

Course content

During the course you will explore a range of ceramic materials, processes and techniques. You will develop confidence in hand-building methods, surface decoration, and finishing techniques while experimenting with different creative approaches.

You will also be introduced to contextual research, exploring artists and designers whose work can inform and inspire your own practice. Projects will encourage experimentation, visual communication and thoughtful development of ideas in response to creative briefs. By the end of the course you will begin building a small portfolio of work that demonstrates your developing skills and creative thinking.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
The course is delivered through practical studio workshops, demonstrations, group discussion and independent project work. You will receive guidance and feedback from your tutor throughout the course to support the development of your work and portfolio in preparation for potential progression onto a Level 2 qualification.
About the tutor
Gina Baum is a Ceramic artists based in Stroud. She creates unique porcelain sculptures developed from experimenting with hand building techniques and reclaimed ceramics. Her work is exhibited throughout the UK and is represented by Hone Gallery in London. Gina has taught Ceramics and Wellbeing courses at SGS Stroud since 2021. Gina completed a Foundation in Art and Design in 2013 at SGS Stroud, a BA in Drawing and Applied Arts in 2017 at University West of England, Bristol and a MA in 2019 at the Royal College of Art in London. She enjoys sharing her knowledge, skills and enthusiasm for Ceramics with everyone
What do I need to join (Entry Requirements)
Applicants must be aged 19 or over at the start of the academic year. You should have previously completed the UAL Level 1 Art & Design course or have equivalent knowledge or experience.

Applicants must be at least 19 years of age at the start of the academic year, and this course is suitable for all levels of ability.
