This highly popular and exciting course will build skills and knowledge in all aspects of musical theatre. Learners will develop their musical theatre skills in singing, dance (jazz, tap, ballet) and acting through a range of performance-based projects, accompanied by demonstrations and guidance from the industry-experienced tutors. Students will study: • Acting technique and performance • Tap dance technique and performance • Ballet technique and performance • Jazz dance technique and performance • Singing technique and performance • Audition technique • Choreography • Collaborative performance projects You will perform in three productions each year at our theatres and other touring venues. The SGS Performing Arts department has excellent facilities, including the 250-seat Olympus theatre, the 80-seat Studio 22 theatre, tech theatre workshops, 4 dance studios, 6 drama studios, singing studios, costume and prop stores and full technical facilities and support.
What do I need to join?
4 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English, as well as a Merit at Level 2. Exceptional entry may be possible if a high level of skill in drama can be demonstrated. People over 19 without formal qualifications will be considered.
How will I know how I am doing?
You will be required to attend a practical audition workshop and take part in an interview for the course.
Maths & English
A key requirement for obtaining many jobs is to achieve a good standard of English and maths. Therefore, learners who do not yet have a GCSE grade 4 (C) will be enrolled on either GCSE or functional skills programmes alongside their main course.
The performing arts and leisure industry is one of the few areas in the jobs market that has sustained levels of employment and has even shown areas of growth in the present economic climate.
There is a work experience requirement linked to your programme and all students will complete industry-related placements.
What can I do next?
You will be prepared for higher education courses at drama schools, universities or for our degree in Musical Theatre taught at the Bristol Institute of Performing Arts (BIPA), WISE Campus.
What are my career options?
