This 12-week course will be delivered remotely, providing you an interactive and engaging experience from your home. Every week your subject teacher will deliver a live remote session centred on writing for television. These sessions will also offer you space to ask questions, request one to one support and interact with your fellow peers.
The course is especially relevant for those who aspire to have their own television show produced. For a television show to be commissioned, the pilot episode is regarded as the most important episode, as producers require audiences to be hooked immediately by a show. To meet such industrial demands, students will be introduced to the key elements required to write a pilot TV screenplay, including narrative structure, characterisation, archetypes, writing effective dialogue, theme and formatting. The course also places an emphasis on writing techniques that learners can employ to help them discover their own unique voice. In turn, learners will be taught various writing methods for injecting their voice into their teleplay to achieve originality.
Your lead subject teacher, Levi Dean is a practicing screenwriter and PhD
researcher in screenwriting studies. Levi has had a number of his research
articles, which explore the practice of screenwriting, published by
international journals. He has also worked and lived in London, Manchester and
internationally in Sweden and North America.
What do I need to join?
No formal qualifications required, but knowledge of contemporary television shows is necessary to grasp key concepts.
You will need access to a computer and the internet to engage with the weekly live sessions and access online resources.
How will I learn?
Content will be unpacked through presentational delivery and stimulating,
engaging activities, which will be informally assessed. Each week you will be
expected to complete an activity pertinent to you completing your first
television script. Notably, midway through the course you will begin developing
a step outline for a television pilot episode. You will be issued formative
feedback and offered one-to-one tutorials to ensure you achieve your goals. You
will also participate in online group readings to acquire peer feedback. At the
end of the course, you will have completed your step outline for your television
pilot episode. You will then have three months to write the first draft of your
pilot episode, with supervisory feedback provided throughout this writing phase.
