Summary

This Level 3 study programme introduces you to the world of sports journalism, which comprises a set of disciplines within the media industry that has greatly expanded in recent years, leading to a huge increase in outlets for creating content about sport. This course will see you acting as a sports correspondent within our renowned sports academy set-up, producing media for all platforms, from television to radio, print to online. Through this course you'll be able to use a variety of video and audio recording equipment, interview emerging sports stars, take press photographs and create material for the internet, including podcasts and documentaries. You will study the skills needed to function effectively as a journalist, including how to write for different audiences, how to operate video cameras and sound recording equipment, how to carry out interviews, how to design websites and take photographs and how to provide match commentary. This Level 3 course is based at our dynamic and exciting WISE Campus, located within easy reach of the city of Bristol and moments away from Bristol Parkway and Bristol Abbey Wood train stations.

How will I know how I am doing?

Coursework is set with structured, achievable targets and clear, regular feedback from your tutor. You will also discuss work as a student group and obtain feedback from your peers.

What do I need to join?

Five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English and Maths. Mature applicants will be considered on their individual merit. All applicants need to bring a portfolio of creative work to their interview and successfully complete a college taster day.

Maths & English

A key requirement for obtaining many jobs is to achieve a good standard of English and Maths. Therefore, learners that do not yet have a GCSE grade C in these subjects will be enrolled on either GCSE or Functional Skills programmes alongside their main study programme.

Employability

The media industry is one of the few areas in the jobs market that has seen sustained levels of employment and even shown areas of growth in the present economic climate.

Work Experience

You will be working with live clients throughout the course to produce media for public consumption. This will include working alongside Sky and BT Sports to cover the College's two semi-professional teams and alongside journalists at the Bristol Post.

What can I do next?

You can progress onto one of the growing number of degrees in sports journalism, or onto a general journalism degree or other media course. You can also enter the industry at entry level, with a view to working your way up. You can progress onto our degree and university courses within the School of Creative Industries.

What are my career options?

Being able to write well and offer media across all platforms will set you up for employment in a wide range of career areas, including journalism, public relations, marketing, radio, TV, film, website design, photography and new media.
