Summary

This vocational course is focused on helping you to develop a range of media skills, as well as a knowledge and understanding of the UK film and TV industry, in preparation for pursuing a career within the field of moving image.

You will learn the skills and craft of film-making, with a large focus on improving your skills in camerawork, editing, sound recording, animation/post-production and lighting. Students are expected to generate their own project ideas and you will be strongly encouraged to work towards your individual career goals, be that becoming a movie director, a YouTube star, a writer, a freelance videographer or any other career path the film and TV industry has to offer.

The media department has four Mac Bay media suites, a TV studio and edit suites, and is well equipped with professional recording and photography resources.

This Level 3 course is based at our dynamic and exciting WISE Campus, located within easy reach of the city of Bristol and moments away from Bristol Parkway and Bristol Abbey Wood train stations.

What do I need to join?

5 GCSEs at grades 4 (C) or above, including English and Maths. Mature applicants will be considered on their individual merit. All applicants need to bring a portfolio of creative work to their interview and successfully complete a College taster day.

Previous work

Maths & English

A key requirement for obtaining many jobs is to achieve a good standard of English and maths. Therefore, learners that do not yet have a GCSE grade 4 (C) in these subjects will be enrolled on either a GCSE or functional skills course alongside their main study programme.

Work Experience

There is a strong focus on industry practice and learning how the TV and film industry works in the UK. All students complete a 36-hour work placement each year. In the first year, you will work with others to produce a promotional/corporate film for an external client, while in the second year you will negotiate your own placement, or participate in a selection process for placements with some of the country's top media employers, such as ITV West and Films@59. You will be offered the chance to get involved in external schemes, such as the Bristol BFI Film Academy and BBC Talent Ticket, as well as the opportunity to participate in TV production experience within the College.

What can I do next?

It is expected that students from this course will be suitably prepared for entry-level employment within the creative industries, such as an apprenticeship or progression onto a degree-level course in a related discipline. Many students choose to progress onto the FdA in Media Production at the SGS School of Creative Industries.
