Information Apply

Unconditional Places to Full-Time Applicants

Due to the uncertainty around how long the Covid-19 outbreak will last, it has been agreed for the immediate future that we will be offering unconditional places to full-time (not University Level) applicants who apply to SGS College.

Once you apply for your course, you will receive a communication offering you a place.

You just need to accept the offer, if you wish to.

We will then be in touch to discuss the offer once the Covid-19 risk reduces.

Summary

If you want to make a difference to peoples lives in a positive way and at the same time gain skills and a health and social care qualification then this is the course for you. CACHE Level 1 qualifications are designed to give you the knowledge and understanding you need to prepare for employment in health and social care settings.

What do I need to join?

Maths and English GCSE at grade 2 (or Functional Skills level E3). You also need a positive attitude towards working with people, young and old, and all their different needs. You will have a commitment to attendance, being punctual and working in a team as well as independently.

How will I learn?

These qualifications are made up of mandatory units and a range of optional units covering key areas of current practice in health and social care such as:

  • Service provision and roles within health and social care
  • Principles and values in health and social care
  • Safeguarding
  • Communication
  • Equality and inclusion
  • Person-centred support
  • Working with others
  • Healthy eating and drinking
  • Leisure and social activities in health and social care
  • Encourage children and young people to eat healthily
  • Introduction to a healthy lifestyle
  • Introduction to Autistic Spectrum Condition
  • Introduction to physical disability
  • Introduction to sensory loss

You will also have a work placement in order to gain vocational experience.

Maths & English

You will have the opportunity to upgrade your maths and English skills. If you have already achieved a D grade (or 3 on the new grading system) then you will be able to resit the GCSE alongside this course. If you have achieved below this level then you will be able to study for a functional skill at a level appropriate to you

Employability

This course provides you with the knowledge to work with children, young people and adults with care needs. CACHE qualifications are popular and effective because they engage learners to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop skills that are essential for the modern-day workplace. These skills include things like team working; working from a prescribed brief; working to deadlines and presenting information effectively.

Work Experience

You will need to complete a minimum of 40 hours work experience in a Health and Social Care Setting.

What can I do next?

Learners who succeed on this course (and demonstrate improvement in English and maths) will be to apply for a level 2 course in health and social care. Alternatively, learners may wish to continue training whilst working (e.g. via an apprenticeship or other work-based learning programme).

What are my career options?

The skills learned in studying a CACHE Diploma will aid progression to further study and/or prepare learners to enter the workplace. In the health and social care sector, typical employment opportunities may be as an apprentice or a support work or health care role, (depending on specific job requirements and age restrictions).

Additional Information

How long is the course?

The course will last 1 year, with up to 4 days in college and a number of block work placement weeks.

How will I learn?

Classroom study will be used to teach you in an informative and interactive way. Support will be provided online and face to-face. During your placement you will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills that you have learnt in the classroom, whilst being supervised by experienced practitioners and teachers.

How will I know how I am doing?

You will be continuously assessed through your assignment tasks, which are internally assessed and graded as pass or refer. Assignments are set throughout the year, so you will know how well you are doing with regular one-to-one feedback from your tutor. Supervisors will also complete a report about your time in placement.

Are there any extra costs?

Material fees (£60) will be required upon enrolment. There will also be costs for optional day trips within the UK, as well as payment for your DBS check (£50.40).
