Functional skills qualifications range from Entry Level to Level 1 and Level 2. English Functional Skills will build your reading, writing and communication skills. The level you start on will depend on the outcome of an initial assessment. Functional skills are practical skills in English and maths, recognised by employers and educational establishments. Functional skills provide an individual with essential knowledge, skills and understanding that will enable them to operate confidently, effectively and independently in life and work. They can be stepping stones to GCSE.
What do I need to join?
You do not need any previous qualifications to join English Functional Skills. The level you are offered will depend on the outcome of your initial assessment. English Functional Skills does not teach you the language of English, so you need to speak English well already. If you are looking for a course that will teach you how to speak and understand English, please refer to ESOL. If you are not sure whether your spoken English is at the right standard, we can offer you advice.
How will I know how I am doing?
At each level there are three separate assessments, one each for reading, writing, and speaking and listening. Assessments can be taken when the learner is ready. At Entry Level, the assessment is taken in class. At Level 1 and Level 2, assessment is through examination.Apply for this course
