About the course

The Pottery for Wellbeing course offers a welcoming, relaxed, and supportive environment where students engage in working with clay. Through traditional hand building techniques such as pinch pots, coiling, slab building, surface decoration, and wheel throwing, you will learn new creative skills. By the end of the course, students will have completed a final project and will have gained a deeper understanding of how working with clay contributes to well-being, along with enhanced skills, confidence, and greater knowledge of materials, techniques and processes. This course provides a relaxed and friendly environment to build upon your previous experience of working with clay.

How is the course delivered and assessed?
There are no formal assessments.

Students will work towards a personal Tailored Learning Outcome regarding their physical health, mental health and developing stronger communities. During the beginning of the course, the tutor will spend 1:1 time with students to determine which learning outcome they would like to work towards.

The course runs weekly for 10 weeks during term time.

Each class lasts for 2 hours.

Throughout the course, you will learn various techniques, including pinch pots, coiling, slab building, surface decoration, and wheel throwing. Our experienced tutors will guide you through tutor demonstrations and provide one-to-one guidance. Projects will enable you to practice new skills and deepen your knowledge. Learning in a supportive and nurturing environment, you will have the opportunity to explore your creativity and develop as a potter. Our courses offer many other opportunities including progression and support into further learning, skills for employment including building confidence to overcome health-related barriers to employment, access and support with essential skills and those who wish to turn their creativity into a career or progression into a qualification.

Students will work towards a Tailored Learning Outcome and by the end of the course, students will have progressed or worked towards their set goal, gain a deeper understanding of how the course can contribute to softer transferable skills. The course will offer many other opportunities including progression and support into further learning, skills for employment including building confidence to overcome health-related barriers to employment, access and support with essential skills in line with our funding criteria.

What do I need to join
Students must be aged 19 years old to attend this course. You don’t need to have any art experience to join this course. We kindly ask that you try to attend each week for the duration of the course to get the most out of the experience. Your regular participation will help you fully benefit from the activities, learning and achieving your goal set out from the Tailored Learning Outcomes. These courses are also available for self-referring or referred patient/client. If you have a support worker or have a condition, we will need to be aware of, please let us know – there may be other specialised creative courses that are more suited to your needs from other health providers. The tutor will spend some time with you 1:1 to support you with your declared needs to ensure we give you the best support and guidance during the course.
What do I need to join (Entry Requirements)
You don’t need to have any experience to join this course, however as part of our series of funded courses, you are limited to one course per term (excluding online, this can be an additional), students need to meet the criteria as set out below. The aim of the course is to improve your well-being, confidence, self-esteem, and creative and vocational skills whilst providing progression routes for your learning through support and guidance from your tutor. These courses are for self-referring or referred patient/client, making the courses available to all. If you're experiencing conditions like stress, anxiety, depression, behaviour-related health issues, mental health, bereavement, chronic pain, or illness, joining us can provide a beneficial experience and a re-engagement into education or employment. If you have a support worker or have a condition we will need to be aware of, please let us know – there may be other specialised creative courses that are more suited to your needs from other health providers. During your first session the tutor will spend some time with you 1:1 to support you with your declared needs to ensure we give you the best support and guidance during the course.
Additional information
The Thursday morning course takes place offsite at the Hub Academy, which is located at the following address; Unit 1-3 Hope Mill Business centre, Hope Mill Lane, Stroud, GL5 2SE. The Thursday afternoon class takes place at our Stroud campus, Stratford Road, GL5 4AH. These courses are delivered under the government Tailored Learning Scheme. They are limited to one Wellbeing course per term (excluding online)

    The courses are part-funded and therefore means / benefit tested, and fees may still apply. Below is our sliding scale table of tiered costings depending on your financial situation. All of these costs are at the part-funded price.

      Subject to means / benefit tested, fees could be reduced to one of the following tiers:

      • Tier 1 - £10 materials (£20 stained glass)

      • Income under £20,319 (Gloucestershire) £23,400 (Bristol area)

      • Benefits - Universal Credit (UC) * Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).

        • Tier 2 - £40 (£50 stained glass)

        • Income – under £27,000 (Gloucestershire and Bristol)

        • Benefits - Universal Credit (UC) **, Carer’s Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), State Pension, Attendance Allowance and food bank voucher.

          • Tier 3 - £50 (£60 stained glass)

            • Income – Between £27,000 and £30,000

              • Tier 4 - £75 (£85 stained glass)

              • Income – Over £30,000

                • *UC Cap for Tier 1 for a sole claim £617per month and for a joint claim £988.
                • **UC Cap Tier 2 for a sole claim £817per month and for a joint claim £1188.LI
