Summary
This qualification is a one-year course and aimed at those looking to work in the construction industry specifically as an advanced craft site carpenter. It will provide you with a range of specialist technical, practical skills and knowledge, which will equip you to seek employment or further training in site carpentry.
You will study the following mandatory content:
- Principles of organising, planning and pricing construction work
- Constructing cut roofing
- Fitting doors, windows and their finishings
- Fixing stairs with turns
- Principles of maintenance and repair
- Setting up and using fixed and transportable machinery
In addition, you will complete practical-based training in the form of work experience and employer-led projects.
To gain this qualification, learners must successfully complete all the mandatory assessments:
- Theory exam
- Synoptic assignment
- Employer involvement requirement

How will I know how I am doing?
Targets will be set and agreed with your tutor; you will receive regular feedback and one-to-one reviews to ensure that you are on track to achieve your goals. Your practical work will also be assessed by your tutor and your portfolio will be assessed by our internal verification team. Parents can also monitor progress through the Pro Monitor portal.
What do I need to join?
A Diploma Level 2 in Carpentry Joinery or a suitable level of previous experience, and grade 4 (C) in Maths and English.
Maths & English
Learners who have not achieved grade 4 (C) or above in Maths and English will be given additional support to improve these skills.
Employability
In conjunction with obtaining a trade qualification and practical experience, learners will also develop other skills, such as interview techniques and CV preparation, to prepare them for the world of work.
Work Experience
All courses include opportunities for learners to experience working in a construction environment – this may be with employers, or as part of a community project or a project within the College campus. This gives learners the opportunity to develop their skills in their chosen trade and will assist with progression choices.
What can I do next?
After successful completion, you can progress onto an apprenticeship or a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations.
What are my career options?
There are many different specialist roles within the industry. Employers will be looking, at minimum, for a Level 2 NVQ or an apprenticeship at an equivalent level. This course provides an excellent foundation upon which to build a career within the construction industry.
