Summary
This qualification is a 1-year course and is aimed at those looking to work in the construction industry specifically as a craftsperson in painting and decorating. A painter and decorator has the skills and knowledge to use a range of coverings, such as paint and wallpaper, to enhance and protect surfaces such as plaster, metal and wood, and they play an important part in any construction team. You will study the following mandatory content: • Principles of construction • Access equipment • Preparation of surface decoration • Application of surface coatings • Application of papers and wall ceilings • Producing decorative colour effects In addition, you will complete practical-based training in the form of work experience and employer-led projects. To gain this qualification, learners must successfully achieve: • One externally set, externally moderated practical assignment • One externally set, externally marked exam, sat under exam conditions • Employer involvement requirement
What do I need to join?
You will have 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above, which must include at least a 3 and a 4 in Maths and English. Ideally, candidates will have completed the Level 1 diploma or can demonstrate knowledge of the trade and complete a skills assessment.
How will I know how I am doing?
At the end of the year, your practical skills will be assessed through a synoptic end test. You will also take a multiple-choice theory exam. Targets will be set and agreed with your tutor throughout the year, and you will receive regular feedback and one-to-one progress reviews with your tutor to ensure that you are on track to achieve your goals.
Maths & English
Learners with a grade 3 in Maths and English are required to retake the qualification, and this will be taught alongside their vocational qualification. Learners with a grade 2 or below in Maths or English will study functional skills alongside their vocational qualification.
Employability
In addition to obtaining a trade qualification and practical experience, learners will also develop other skills, such as interview techniques, CV preparation and digital skills, to prepare them for the world of work. Learners will participate in trade competitions judged by local employers and participate in cross-college employability events.
Work Experience
All learners are required to complete work experience in a construction environment. This could be with local construction companies or as part of a community project. This gives learners the opportunity to develop their employability and practical skills in their chosen trade and will assist with their progression choices.
What can I do next?
After successful completion, you can progress onto a NVQ Level 3 in Painting and Decorating. Alternatively, entry to an apprenticeship can be gained if suitable employment is found.
