Unconditional Places to Full-Time Applicants

Due to the uncertainty around how long the Covid-19 outbreak will last, it has been agreed for the immediate future that we will be offering unconditional places to full-time (not University Level) applicants who apply to SGS College.

Once you apply for your course, you will receive a communication offering you a place.

You just need to accept the offer, if you wish to.

We will then be in touch to discuss the offer once the Covid-19 risk reduces.

Summary

This is a 1-year course for candidates who work or want to work as a painter and decorator in the construction sector. It allows you to learn, develop and practice the skills required for employment and/or a career as a painter and decorator. It covers the following skills: • Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms • Preparing surfaces for decoration • Applying paint systems by brush and roller to non-complex areas • Applying foundation and plain papers • Producing specialist technical finishes To gain this qualification, learners must achieve 41 credits from the 7 mandatory units. There are practical and theory marked assessments.

How will I know how I am doing?

At the end of the year, your practical skills will be assessed through a synoptic end test. You will also take a multiple-choice theory exam. Targets will be set and agreed with your tutor throughout the year, and you will receive regular feedback and one-to-one progress reviews with your tutor to ensure that you are on track to achieve your goals.

What do I need to join?

You will have GCSEs at grade 2 or above, which must include at least a 2 and 3 in Maths and English.

Maths & English

Learners with a grade 3 in Maths and English are required to retake the qualification, and this will be taught alongside their vocational qualification. Learners with a grade 2 or below in Maths or English will study functional skills alongside their vocational qualification.

Employability

In addition to obtaining a trade qualification and practical experience, learners will also develop other skills, such as interview techniques, CV preparation and digital skills, to prepare them for the world of work. Learners will participate in trade competitions judged by local employers and participate in cross-college employability events.

Work Experience

All learners are required to complete work experience in a construction environment. This could be with local construction companies or as part of a community project. This gives learners the opportunity to develop their employability and practical skills in their chosen trade and will assist with their progression choices.

What can I do next?

After successful completion, you can progress onto a Level 2 in Painting and Decorating. Alternatively, entry to an apprenticeship can be gained if suitable employment is found.
