This one-year, one A-level-equivalent programme is designed to provide learners with the underpinning knowledge required to progress into the industry. Examples of units include: animal biology, animal welfare and ethics, animal behaviour and practical animal husbandry.
How will I know how I am doing?
A variety of assessment methods will be used to assess learners' progress from their starting point and against their expected outcomes and target grade. These may include practical tasks and assessments, written assignments, performance reviews, presentations and discussions and exams. Progress will be discussed with your tutor and other delivery staff on the programme.
What do I need to join?
Learners will require four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English, Maths and Science.
Maths & English
A key requirement for future progression and employment is a good understanding and application of knowledge and skills in both English and maths. Learners will be provided with the opportunity to practice skills gained in English and maths, with feedback provided and any areas for development identified.
At SGS we aim to provide learners with the skills required to be able to progress into further study, training or employment upon completion of their programme of study. Key attributes required by employers are that individuals be enthusiastic, motivated, presentable (in some instances in company uniform), organised, articulate, able to think 'outside the box', business-like and enterprising, and that they have a 'can-do' attitude. At SGS we work on all these areas throughout the duration of your programme of study, and your tutor(s) will provide feedback on progress made, as well as any areas for development.
As part of their overall programme of study, learners will be required to undertake a period of work placement related to the field of employment they wish to enter. Our Work Placement Team will assist learners in gaining a placement and will ensure that learners are on track to achieve, whilst liaising with course tutors to ensure that opportunities to practice necessary employability skills are available at college.
What can I do next?
Learners who successfully complete this programme of study and have the required attendance and target grade will be eligible to progress onto Level 3, Year 2, which when completed will provide equivalent points to three A-levels. Alternatively, learners may wish to progress into an apprenticeship, complete further training or enter the industry.
