Covid Update

On Tuesday 29 March, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Sajid Javid, set out the next steps for living with COVID-19 in England from Friday 1 April.

Updated guidance advises:

  • Adults with the symptoms of a respiratory infection, and who have a high temperature or feel unwell, should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until they feel well enough to resume normal activities and no longer have a high temperature.
  • Children and young people who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and avoid contact with other people. They can return to college when they no longer have a high temperature, and are well enough to attend.
  • Adults with a positive COVID-19 test result should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days, which is when they are most infectious. For children and young people aged 18 and under, the advice is 3 days.

For education and childcare settings from Friday 1 April:

  • Regular asymptomatic testing is no longer recommended in any education or childcare setting, including in SEND, alternative provision and children’s social care settings. Therefore, we will no longer be able to order test kits .

Summary

Role Profile
An Infrastructure Technician provides support to internal and external customers, helping them to be productive when using technology to do their own jobs, by using tools to problem solve and trouble shoot non-routine problems. The Infrastructure Technician sets people up on systems and provides support when they need it, rectifying issues to maintain the organisations productivity.

Duration
18 months

Those completing the apprenticeship are eligible to apply for registration onto the register of IT technicians confirming SFIA level 3 professional competence.

Resources
Resources will be available through Smart Assessor, the e-portfolio platform used by the college for apprentices.


Assessment Overview
The end point assessment includes an assessment of all the requirements of the standard, including, competencies, knowledge and behaviours. It takes place in the final few months of the apprenticeship, using four assessment methods:

  • Summative portfolio
  • Synoptic project
  • Employer reference
  • Interview

The use of a variety of assessment methods in the final end point assessment ensures that the assessment of each apprentice is based on their performance and reflects accurately the quality of their work and the application of skills, knowledge and behaviours specified in the standards. Taken together, these components of the final end point assessment build a cumulative picture of performance against the standard, enabling the independent assessor to make a holistic judgement about how well the apprentice meets or exceeds the standard.

Our recommended End Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO) is BTEC

Summative Portfolio
Provides evidence against the totality of the standard, based on the application of knowledge, competence and behaviours to real work projects in the work environment.

This is key to ensure the validity of the final assessment decision.

Synoptic Project
Provides evidence against a selected set of knowledge, competencies and behaviours against a pre-defined project undertaken in a controlled environment.

This is key to ensure consistency and comparability, increasing the accuracy of the assessment decision.

Employer Reference
Provides the employer’s perspective on how the apprentice has performed in the workplace and how they have applied their knowledge, competencies and behaviours in work projects.

Interview
Provides an opportunity for further evidence to be gathered and/or evidence to be explored in more detail against any of the knowledge, competence or behaviours.

This also increases accuracy and validity.

  • Understands how to operate remotely and how to deploy and securely integrate mobile devices
  • Understanding and working knowledge of Cloud and Cloud Services
  • Understands the importance of disaster recovery and how a disaster recovery plan works and their role within it
  • Understands the similarities and differences between a range of coding and logic
  • Understands and complies with business processes
  • Working knowledge of business IT skills relevant to the organisation

20% Off-The-Job Training
“Off-the-job training is a statutory requirement for an apprenticeship. It is training which is received by the apprentice, during the apprentice’s normal working hours, for the purpose of achieving the knowledge, skills and behaviors of the apprenticeship.”

In addition, there will be relevant activities in the workplace which will be discussed and planned with the assessor which will count towards the total hours required.

How will I learn?

SGS has elected to deliver the on-programme learning using the Ofqual-regulated knowledge modules listed below. The standard is assessed by a range of methods to meet all the knowledge, skills and behaviours. Evidence will be collated within a portfolio of evidence. To achieve the full Level 3 Award all 5 modules must be assessed and passed together with successful completion of the EPA &meeting all BTEC assessment criteria. Those completing the apprenticeship are eligible to apply for registration onto the register of IT technicians confirming SFIA level 3 professional competence.

Maths & English

This apprenticeship requires learners to achieve math’s and English at Level 2. Typically, it is realistic for learners to progress up one level during the apprenticeship. At interview, we will carry out an assessment to determine current literacy and numeracy levels.  We will take account of any support needs in determining the suitability of learners for this apprenticeship.

Course fees explained

The course fee can usually be broken down to three components which are Materials (resources required to study the course, for example stationary, books and other equipment), Tuition (teaching, classroom etc) and Exams. Depending on age, financial circumstances and a number of other factors you could be asked to pay the full fee or just elements of it. Usually Learners under 19s studying Full-Time courses have just Material fee costs to pay, over 19s on Full-Time or Part-Time courses usually have materials, exams and tuition fees to pay.
