The Level 3 Diploma in Fashion, Theatre and Media Hair and Make-Up Studies is a specialist vocational qualification for both men and women. If you have an artistic nature and a love of the theatrical, this course will equip you with industry knowledge, understanding and skills. The course develops highly proficient professional make-up and hair artists, specialising in theatrical and special effects make-up. This course covers a broad range of subjects, including: • Fashion photographic make-up • Media make-up • Camouflage make-up • Airbrush make-up • Fantasy hair design for performers
What do I need to join?
You will need 3 GCSEs at grade 4 (C), including English. Successful applicants must have a genuine passion and creative flair for make-up artistry. Applications are welcomed from candidates who have successfully completed a Level 2 qualification in Art and Design or a related discipline, including those who have AS/A-level qualifications in an art or design-based subject. You should demonstrate a genuine interest in theatrical and media make-up and hair. Life experience will be considered for mature applicants.
How will I know how I am doing?
You will be assessed through observation of practical assessments, assignments and examinations. Experienced tutors will closely monitor and guide you through techniques to ensure you are meeting and exceeding industry standards. You will have personal, one-to-one tutorials to review your progress regularly.
Maths & English
You will be given the opportunity to improve and advance your skills in both subjects, enabling you to progress in your studies or career. For students who have a GCSE grade 3 (D) or below in maths, you will work to improve your grade alongside your course. You will study at a level suited to your knowledge and understanding.
From this course you can gain freelance employment working in the theatre, TV and film and doing photographic work. Other career paths include working with fashion and cosmetics companies as promotional make-up artists.
It is recommended that you gain work experience in this area, through voluntary work or part-time employment, to give you greater insight into the industry. You will also be involved behind the scenes on SWADA productions within the College.
