This course is suitable for the committed student who wants to engage in
their study of stained glass. You can develop all your craft skills, try out new
techniques and work on individual projects. This is a really great opportunity
for you to develop a programme of study that suits your needs and to work
alongside other enthusiastic and productive students.
You can develop all your design and fabrication skills for leading or copper
foil work, as well as
experiment with fusing, kiln-fired glass paint/stain/enamels. If you want to
enrol for 20 weeks on the autumn and spring courses, you will be able to enrol
for the L1 AIM Award qualification. After that, you can progress onto the L2 AIM
Award (20 weeks) or the L1 AIM Certificate (30 weeks), or you can enrol on the
practical class which sits alongside it.
Ruth Adams has taught fired stained-glass painting at Central Saint Martins,
where she previously completed her postgraduate studies in glass with
distinction. She taught stained glass for
ten years at the City Literary Institute in Central London. Ruth relocated to
Stroud, where she works as a practicing artist, and she set up the glass
department within the Arts School at Stroud College. She is a respected educator
within this field, with an enormous amount of experience and enthusiasm to help
you engage with this fantastic subject. Your fee includes the finest materials
to make test samples and a leaded panel up to A3 size, or equivalent fusing
There is a wonderful range of beautiful glass for you to use on your
course, as well as lead, solder, glass paints/stains/enamels, fusing glass and
sundries. If you want to make larger work, you may choose to buy some additional
materials from a supplier or the tutor.
How will I learn?
You can negotiate your programme of study at the beginning of the course and the tutor will deliver appropriate demonstrations to suit the group and individual needs. There is time to experiment and make tests before applying what you have learnt to a specific project of your choice. The tutor will help you and check your work to make sure you are progressing well. There will be one-to-one feedback and group appreciation.
It is beneficial to have at least three terms of previous experience in stained glass or at least one term of stained glass if you have a lot of other experience within art and design.
