Summary

Beginners will be taken through a structured course, step by step, to include all the stages essential for making a leaded stained-glass panel (maximum size A3). This will cover design, cut line drawings, selecting and cutting coloured glass, leading, soldering cementing and finishing techniques.

Continuing students can develop their design and craft skills, as well as try out new techniques, e.g. fusing, copper foil, kiln-fired glass painting.

  • Cut glass safely
  • Shape glass to size with pliers
  • Cut leads accurately
  • Solder neatly
  • Make a small piece of leaded stained glass
  • Continuing students can experiment with new techniques

Your fee includes the finest materials to make a leaded panel up to A3 size. There is a wonderful range of beautiful glass for you to use on your course, as well as lead, solder, fusing glass and sundries. If you want to make larger work, you may choose to buy some additional materials from a supplier or the tutor.

Ruth Adams has taught fired stained-glass painting at Central Saint Martins, where she previously completed her postgraduate studies in glass with distinction. She taught stained glass for ten years at the City Literary Institute in Central London. Ruth relocated to Stroud, where she works as a practicing artist, and she set up the glass department within the Arts School at Stroud Campus. She is a respected educator within this field, with an enormous amount of experience and enthusiasm to help you engage with this fantastic subject.

How will I learn?

The tutor will give demonstration and one-to-one support. The tutor will help you and check your work to make sure you are progressing well.

Entry Requirements

This course has no entry requirements, we just ask you have a passion for the subject and ideally had some experience in stained glass.

What can I do next?

You can enrol on another beginners course to continue to develop your skills in stained glass and to try out new techniques such as fusing, copper foil and kiln-fired glass painting. Three terms of introduction or beginners courses is usually essential before you progress onto the intermediate/advanced course. You can enrol on the Easter Fusing Glass Workshop or the Stained Glass Summer School.

If you want to gain a qualification in this subject, you can join the L1 AIM Award course (20 weeks) that runs from September on Thursday mornings, 9:30–12:00, which is also suitable for beginners or progressing students.
