The L2 Art and Design course is designed to give students the fundamental basics of 2D and 3D material practice. Emphasis will be placed on hands-on tuition and supporting individual development. The course will enable students to develop vital practical skills that will contribute to the success of a career in the arts. It will provide vital insight into working with art-sector professionals and enable young creatives to connect with others who are similarly at the start of their career. Units will include drawing, painting, animated graphics and printmaking, as well as sculpture and clay. The course will offer a combination of frequent demonstrations, practical tips and personal tuition, as well as examples of the tutor's own work.
What do I need to join?
Four GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above, English and Maths are desirable, or a relevant Level 1 qualification. As this is a creative course, we would also like to see a portfolio of creative work at your interview.
How will I know how I am doing?
Project work is set with structured, achievable targets organised around practical assessment. You will also discuss project work through group critiques, with verbal feedback from tutors and peers. Regular tutorials and reviews will take place with your personal tutor to discuss targets and progress.
Maths & English
The majority of employers look for at least GCSE grade 4/C in English and Maths, so learners without these will be enrolled onto GCSEs or a functional skills programme alongside their main course. This is because English and maths are important skills that will benefit learners in many ways, including in their studies, their future employment and their general well-being.
The qualification gained from this course is equivalent to 4 GCSEs. It is recommended that students progress onto Level 3 courses to improve their employability.
Learners are encouraged to seek opportunities relevant to their specialism outside of an academic institution. These placements will introduce students to multiple perspectives, contexts and understandings. This will provide valuable continuing professional development opportunities.
What can I do next?
You can progress onto the Level 3 Extended Diploma courses we offer. We offer courses in graphics and illustration, fashion and textiles, product design, photography, moving image and art and design. These 2-year courses provide students with an excellent foundation for achieving placements at the best universities and colleges in the country.
What are my career options?
The course provides students with the opportunity to enhance existing skills in preparation for careers as practicing creatives within related fields. The potential employment areas in the creative industries are very wide, and some careers chosen by previous students include art technician, art administrator, illustrator, conservator and teacher.Apply for this course
