Summary
Glass fusing is an immediate and popular technique for melting glass.
Learn the basics of glass fusing to make either a decorative bowl or platter and
four coasters.
You will have time to plan and make your project, as well as experiment with different fusing techniques using frits, stringers, inclusions, oxides and high firing enamels. You will learn about glass compatibility and different firing cycles for fusing and slumping glass into moulds. A fun, easy technique suitable for beginners and anyone who wants to further develop their creative skills in glass.
Ruth Adams has taught fired stained-glass painting at Central Saint Martins, where she previously completed her postgraduate studies in glass with distinction. She taught stained glass for ten years at the City Literary Institute in Central London. Ruth relocated to Stroud, where she works as a practicing artist, and she set up the glass department within the Arts School at Stroud College. She is a respected educator within this field, with an enormous amount of experience and enthusiasm to help you engage with this fantastic subject.
Your fee includes the finest materials to make test samples, a bowl or platter and four coasters. There is a wonderful range of beautiful fusing glass for you to use on your course, as well fusing sundries, frits, stringers, noodles, oxides and metals. If you want to make larger work, you may choose to buy some additional fusing materials from a supplier or the tutor.
How will I learn?
This course is based at our Stroud campus in the centre of Gloucestershire, surrounded by the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The campus is moments away from Stroud train station and easily accessible by bus.
The tutor will give demonstration and one-to-one support. The tutor will help
you and check your work to make sure you are progressing
well.

This course is suitable for complete beginners or students who already have some experience of stained or fused glass.

What can I do next?
You can join either a daytime stained-glass class on Friday afternoons or the Thursday evening All Levels course. For those with more experience, there is also an advanced/intermediate glass class running on Friday mornings. The Stained Glass Summer School gives you an opportunity to immerse yourself in an intensive five days of study, where you could explore fusing further to create fused elements to combine with leading, stained glass and kiln-fired painting techniques.
