Course
information
Summary
This all levels course will enable learners of any experience to enjoy Ceramics. If you have never touched clay before, you will join the class as a 'Beginner' or if you have been making work for many years already then you will join as 'Intermediate/Advanced'. Tutor assessment will begin on day one to ascertain which course the student will follow and in turn which Team they will be allocated to.
Beginners who are new to clay will be introduced to a range of making techniques; coiling, plaster mould use, slab building, wheel-throwing, glazing/finishing and raku firing. You will learn about the use of associated tools and equipment with regular discussion/feedback opportunities with the peer group to converse about their work and the work of their peers. Alongside the regular tasks set, the group will have one-to-one tutorials with their practitioner tutor, who is a Master of Ceramics from the Royal College of Art. The course has vast research angle, introducing new makers to some masters of particular techniques and styles, which will also be discussed as a group.
Intermediate/Advanced classes are for learners that have used clay and understand the foundations of ceramic practice covered in the beginners course. This course is self-led, where the student is able to develop their own practice through the group tutorials and one-to-one tutorials with their practitioner tutor. There will be regular discussions/feedback events as a group, enabling the learner to grow in confidence in discussing their work and the work of others. Opportunities to take their learning further will be to undertake a longer session with the 'Extended Workshop' session of 5 hours. All learners will have access to specialist equipment, a range of earthenware clays and stoneware clays including porcelain. You will also have access to a range of glazes and glaze making materials, coloured slips and oxides. Makers will take part in a live raku firing; a great team-work exercise and an instant firing technique. All learners will have the option to show work at the final summer show in 2021.
How will I know how I am doing?
Your tutor will always check your progress and help you with technical solutions. The class will participate in group evaluations through informal crits or ‘show-and-tell’ sessions. One-to-one tutorial support from the tutor is always available on request.
