Through a series of lectures and discussion, experienced ceramicist and artist Emily Joy will take you through the development of ceramic sculpture, from early 20th Century developments in pottery and ceramics, through the tumultuous changes post war and mid-century, to contemporary ceramic sculpture. We will examine how ceramic sculpture moved away from pottery and the craft world and is now breaking new creative ground. We will be looking at questions of craft and art, aesthetics and how art develops in response to changes in the world around us.
How will I learn?
Every other week you will be offered an online live lecture - with plenty of relevant contextual information, cases studies of ceramic sculptors, and rich visual material - followed by a chance to discuss and debate points that may arise. You will be encouraged to keep notes and a sketchbook. Each following week you will be given an artist, movement or theme to research and a sketchbook task to complete, leading to the creation of a sketchbook of sculptural designs and ideas. To support this, you will be offered regular tutorials and will be encouraged to post questions, ideas and work through our online platform TEAMs.
