Assessment Methods

Formative Assessment
There is a large proportion of formative assessment to ensure apprentices are safe to work and have demonstrated the application of knowledge and the skills in the workplace under working conditions before being able to access the end point assessment.

A portfolio of evidence. This is to ensure candidate’s competence across the various tasks in the workplace required in undertaking the role of a Property Maintenance Operative. The ‘behaviours’ will also be incorporated into the portfolio of evidence. This evidence generated in the workplace will be verified by a qualified assessor to ensure it is valid and sufficient. This will be graded pass/fail.

A short research assignment.  This will cover the industry and the apprentice’s workplace, as well as underpinning knowledge from the Technical Specification. This assignment will be graded pass/distinction/fail.

End Point Assessment
This comprises of three components:

1. Synoptic knowledge assessment, consisting of 60 multiple-choice questions assessing the generic knowledge across the apprenticeship.

2. Synoptic practical assessment, assessed by an independent assessor that requires the candidate to complete a number of core practical activities, in controlled conditions. The activities will be chosen from a bank of tasks developed by the Awarding Organisation working with representatives of the employers. Evidence will predominantly be via observation but could also include oral questioning to ensure the apprentice has the skills and supporting knowledge required of the role. This will be graded pass/distinction/fail.

3. Synoptic interview to question the apprentice on skills not covered by the practical assessment as well as the behaviours using the portfolio of evidence as a basis for the discussion. This will be carried out by the independent assessor and graded pass/fail.

20% Off-The-Job Training
“Off-the-job training is a statutory requirement for an apprenticeship. It is training which is received by the apprentice, during the apprentice’s normal working hours, for the purpose of achieving the knowledge, skills and behaviours of the apprenticeship.”

Maths & English

This apprenticeship requires learners to achieve maths and English at Level 1. Typically, it is realistic for learners to progress up one level during the apprenticeship. At interview, we will carry out an assessment to determine current literacy and numeracy levels. We will take account of any support needs in determining the suitability of learners for this apprenticeship.
