The overall aim of this course is to provide applicants with the opportunity to build the necessary skills and qualifications to progress to our Access to Higher Education Diploma. The Level 2 Certificate allows an insight into to the subjects that will be studied next on the Access to HE Diploma, and in addition applicants will also study their GCSEs in English and Maths. The range of work undertaken throughout the course provides improvement on both academic and study skills and is designed to help applicants build a solid learning foundation in a welcoming and supportive environment. We want you to develop your knowledge and skills, but also to build new relationships, confidence and self-esteem. The course is normally delivered over a three day timetable.
How will I know how I am doing?
Assessments will be through assignments and a portfolio of evidence. You will complete units of work in psychology, sociology and information technology (IT). GCSE exams will be taken in English and/or Maths.
What do I need to join?
There are no formal qualifications required to join the Pre-Access course however through interview and assessments you should be able to demonstrate you are able to operate at Level 1. You should also be over 19 years of age by the course start date. We appreciate that many will be nervous about returning to education and you will be supported at every stage of the programme. If you are a mature student who is looking to start a new career, then this course is perfect for you. Take your first steps towards your new career whilst gaining valuable experience, knowledge and skills.
What can I do next?
Successful completion of your Pre-Access Certificate and achieving minimum grade 4’s in your Maths and English GCSEs offers many opportunities for Level 3 courses within the college. Most of our applicants hope to progress to one of our Access to HE Diplomas. Some of these pathways require vocational experience alongside academic qualifications, and these will be discussed with you as part of the Pre-Access course. Please note that some Access courses require you to pass additional tests, such as an additional Maths test for entry to the Access to Science pathway.
What are my career options?
During Pre-Access, applicants will have the chance to think more about the career route they wish to follow. If successfully completed your future career options are endless from Nursing to Biomedical Science!
