The Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sports Coaching is designed for learners who want to progress directly into employment in an assistant coaching role, or for those wishing to progress into higher education after successful completion of the Year 2 top-up (university programmes).
This is a career-focused qualification with industry endorsement and accreditation. It enables learners to develop underpinning knowledge and technical skills and to gain experience as an assistant coach.
Learners taking this qualification will study three mandatory units:
- Unit A – Careers in the sports and active leisure industry
- Unit B – Health, well-being and sport
- Unit C – Developing coaching skills
What do I need to join?
Learners will require three GCSEs at grade 4 or above, which must include English or Maths. You will also display (at interview and a college taster day) an enthusiasm for the industry, in addition to an interest in sport and/or coaching and a keen motivation to learn.

100% coursework – a range of internal assessment methods:
- Written assignments
- Portfolio of evidence
- Video evidence
Maths & English
A key requirement for future progression and employment is a good understanding and application of knowledge and skills in both English and maths. Learners who are enrolled on this course will also, as part of their overall programme of study, be enrolled on either GCSE English or Maths in order to progress towards gaining GCSE grade 4 in both subjects.
Learners on this course will undertake a minimum of 36 hours of work experience with local organisations in the delivery of sporting opportunities, in order to experience real-life delivery to groups of participants.
