Covid Update

On Tuesday 29 March, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Sajid Javid, set out the next steps for living with COVID-19 in England from Friday 1 April.

Updated guidance advises:

  • Adults with the symptoms of a respiratory infection, and who have a high temperature or feel unwell, should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until they feel well enough to resume normal activities and no longer have a high temperature.
  • Children and young people who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and avoid contact with other people. They can return to college when they no longer have a high temperature, and are well enough to attend.
  • Adults with a positive COVID-19 test result should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days, which is when they are most infectious. For children and young people aged 18 and under, the advice is 3 days.

For education and childcare settings from Friday 1 April:

  • Regular asymptomatic testing is no longer recommended in any education or childcare setting, including in SEND, alternative provision and children’s social care settings. Therefore, we will no longer be able to order test kits .

SGS College formally opens new campus, SGS Horizon

As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2023, SGS College formally opened its new construction training academy, SGS Horizon, today.

Attended by SGS students, staff, governors, regional employers, local enterprise partnership representatives and the local community, the brand-new campus highlighted the achievements of apprentices and the positive impact they make to businesses and the wider economy.

Dedicated to teaching construction apprentices, the training academy, located within Horizon 38, offers apprentices a specialised centre aimed at teaching the next generation of industry professionals.

SGS Horizon has been built with employers in mind, specially designed to help construction apprentices learn the skills they need when they progress into the world of work.

Assistant Principal for Apprenticeships and Employer Engagement, Sarah Stephens-Lewis comments:

"Today we celebrated apprentices and showcased the benefits that apprenticeships bring to all involved. We are all excited to have this new dedicated construction apprenticeship training centre whereby students will have first-class facilities to aid their learning."

"SGS Horizon is a direct response to the needs of the construction sector in Bristol and South Gloucestershire, including the growing demand for workers to fill skills shortages, the buoyant housing market and the interest in renewable energies and sustainable development. SGS Horizon will provide learners and employers with the flexible apprenticeship delivery they need to develop their organisations."

The 1580m2 building features purpose-built workshops, classrooms and IT suites maximising the College’s ability to provide a streamlined approach to skills and knowledge development. Based within 1 mile of the College’s current Filton Campus, SGS Horizon is in an ideal location to ensure that apprentices will benefit from the open plan delivery space and the dedicated focus on their sector whilst having access to the College’s learning resource centre and student support functions.

Kieran Harper is just one of the students studying in the new facilities. The 24-year-old from Swindon is undertaking a plastering apprenticeship at SGS whilst working at Stonewood Builders. He comments: “SGS Horizon is modern, spacious and the new facilities are easily accessible. It’s really nice. I like the open learning zone as it is a great place to study. I can use the knowledge and skills learnt at college when I go to work. I have everything I need for my apprenticeship at SGS Horizon.”

Florence Hale, Customer Engagement Advisor at CITB attended the event today. She said:

"I think SGS Horizon is an amazing premises. It’s brilliant here and so easy to access."
