Student placement helps the homeless

Level 3 Health students from SGS College undertook their work placement at the beginning of December at the Wild Goose Café in Easton.

The café which is a drop-in centre for the homeless and hungry, provides food, support and advice for attendees.

Five students currently studying level 3 Health undertook the week long work experience at the busy centre, during one of the coldest weeks we have had so far this winter.

Esther Lambert works at the Wild Goose Café, she commented: "The students who came to volunteer were absolutely fantastic. They all worked very hard and were willing and able to do any task we asked them to do.

“During the week they were involved with serving and preparing food, cleaning, washing up, serving teas and coffees and helping to organise our store rooms. They were always cheerful and had very positive attitudes towards the work they were doing. They were very resourceful and used their own initiative when things needed doing.

At times the Wild Goose can become very busy and the environment can become quite stressful. The students were calm and bought a peaceful presence. They engaged brilliantly with our service users and were happy to chat with them. During their week here a few of the students bought in donations for the service users including sleeping bags and warm clothes. They all seemed genuinely interested in the lives of our service users and were impacted by their experience with us. We would welcome them back any time.”

Student Izzy Dawkins said: "It has really opened my eyes to how some people live. I've enjoyed being part of a team and have learnt a lot about supporting these vulnerable people."

Work Placement Manager at SGS College, Steve Hall added: "It was wonderful to receive such positive comments from all of the staff at the Wild Goose Café.”
