SGS announces its official partnership with Bristol Pride
We are proud to announce our partnership with Bristol Pride.
A celebration of equality and diversity, Bristol Pride has become one of the most iconic Pride Celebrations in the UK welcoming an incredible 36,000 people last year.
Principal Sara-Jane Watkins comments: “Bristol Pride takes place on the 13th of July 2019 and we’re inviting all staff and students to join us in the Pride parade along with the day’s festivities. Last year a whopping 12,000 people took part and we’re hoping that in the year we mark the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the birth of the Pride movement, we will see as many of you as possible to show Bristol how committed we are as a supporter and ally of the LGBTQ+ community.”
According to a 2018 report by the UK charity Stonewall, in the year leading up to the survey, over half of LGBTQ+ people have experienced depression, 41% of gender non-binary people self-harmed, and one in eight LGBTQ+ people aged 18-24 attempted to take their own life. Regarding medical care, 20% of trans people witnessed negative or discriminatory remarks from healthcare professionals, 14% of LGBTQ+ people had avoided seeking care for fear of discrimination, and 5% of LGBTQ+ people were pressured to access services attempting to change their sexual orientation.
Sara-Jane added: “As a community of diverse learners it is paramount that the importance of tolerance and acceptance is recognized. The challenges and barriers that come with such responsibility are not to be underestimated but what is crucial is the opportunity for discussion and meaningful dialogue. With many progressive steps in recent years relating to LGBTQ+ equality, is it sometimes easy to forget that full acceptance has not been attained and many LGBTQ+ groups are not represented or acknowledged. At SGS College we continue to support and standby our LGBTQ+ communities as allies in the ongoing effort for equality.”
“We wish everybody a very happy and safe Pride season.”
