What is Clearing?

Clearing is the process where students, who do not currently hold any offers or have declined all their offers can find a course with available places. Over 50,000 UK applicants found a place through Clearing last year. SGS currently has Clearing options available across a varied range of programmes.

Am I eligible for Clearing?

You can use Clearing if you:
  • Applied after 30th June 2020
  • Applied before 30th June 2020 and didn’t receive any offers (or you've declined all your offers).
  • Didn’t meet the conditions of an offer and your firm or insurance choice did not confirm or offer you a place.

How to apply through Clearing or make an Adjustment

UCAS Track is available from 3pm on your results day, this is when you can make an application through Clearing. Make sure you're making the best decision and contact our clearing hotline to discuss your options from 7am on results day.

Results:
  • If your results are what you were expecting: your place will have been confirmed and you won’t be in Clearing.
  • If your result is better than you were expecting: you could use Adjustment to apply for a course with higher entry requirements.
  • If your results are not as you expected or you've received no holding offers: call our clearing hotline and enter Clearing.

Entering Clearing

  • Go to www.ucas.com and select ‘UCAS Track.’ If you aren’t holding any offers your clearing number will be displayed there.
  • UCAS will update the list of courses that still have places available. You don’t have to stick with your original choice of subject.
  • Contact our Clearing hotline. You’ll need your results, UCAS Personal ID number, an idea of what you'd like to study, your email address and a pen and paper to take some notes.
  • You’ll be able to add your Clearing choice on UCAS Track from 3.00pm on results day.

Information for Parents and Guardians

If you care for someone who's results aren't what they were expecting, they've changed their mind or they've only just decided to go study an undergraduate degree course the Clearing service is a simple way to secure an offer.

How does Clearing work?

Individuals can find out if they’re eligible for Clearing by logging into their UCAS Track record or if they've not applied by setting up a UCAS account. Individuals will also receive an email from their Firm and Insurance institutes confirming whether they’ve been successful. If Clearing is available a unique clearing number will appear on the UCAS portal.

As soon as they have their Clearing Number start calling institution clearing hotlines. If the institution feels they're a match, they will ask them to apply for the courses, they'll need to add the course as their Clearing choice in UCAS Track. You can only enter one choice.

Clearing hotlines typically open around 7am on results day. Course places are limited and clearing lines are often very busy so keep trying if the lines are busy.

Information for Education & Careers Advisors

Will students be made an offer over the phone when they call?

Over the phone offers vary depending on the course they're applying for. Our dedicated clearing team will be able to talk through the next steps and offers over the phone. However, in most cases, a verbal offer will be made on the phone, as long as the students meet the entry requirements. Once a verbal offer is made, we will follow up with an official offer email within a few hours.

Can students visit the campus over Clearing?

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, our campuses remain closed. We are offering bespoke one to one or small group information, advice and guidance sessions and subject webinars. Please contact [email protected] or use our clearing hotline to book a bespoke session.

Can students in Clearing secure accommodation in Bristol?

Bristol is a very popular destination for students, with this in mind we encourage our applicants to search and apply for student accommodation at the earliest opportunity. Our admissions team can advise on providers and locations. Please contact 0117 9092376 or email [email protected]

On A Level results day our clearing hotline will open at 7am. Hotline: 01179092376.

I've been accepted at another institution but I've changed my mind and would like to apply to SGS

If you are holding a firm unconditional place, you can use online self-release into Clearing, by using the ‘decline your place’ button in Track. If you release from your current unconditional firm choice you will be placed into Clearing. A release from your unconditional firm offer will not automatically allow you to go to your insurance choice.
