Access to high-level competition

Student athletes regularly compete at events throughout the academic year, including the South England Student Sports Association (SESSA) meet in Lee Valley, the South West Colleges Cross-Country Championship, the Cardiff Open Grand Prix, the Avon Schools Championship and the South-West Championships.

Healthy, competitive environment

The Athletics Academy has gone from strength to strength since it was founded in 2010. There are currently a range of different athletes in the academy from beginner to elite and across all event specialisms, which prides itself on developing competitors from beginners up to national and international standards across all track and field events under the tutelage of Head of the Academy Andrea Garcia-Lock and Coach Joy Bray.

For prospective students, having a high level of commitment to the Athletics Academy is expected from all the coaches.

All student athletes are brought together in a team environment and students bond and reach higher levels through in-house competition and having access to high-level coaching across all track and field disciplines.

The Athletics Academy allows students to reach optimum performance levels through a full-time training programme that combines track sessions with fully personalised training programmes that are specifically tailored for each student.

Academy students are rostered to supervised gym sessions so they can complete a fully personalised strength and conditioning programme. There is also on-site access to physiotherapists, which helps with the avoidance of injuries.

Student athletes get regular workshops on psychology, nutrition, goal setting and dealing with performance anxiety. They regularly get master workshop coaching for specific events and we also provide access to club training nights hosted at SGS twice a week.

Facilities

We have Grade A track and field facilities at our WISE campus, where we proudly hosted the Kenyan Olympic and Paralympic training camps before the London Olympics and Paralympics in 2012.

We boast an 8-lane floodlit competition track that is equipped with double long jump pits.

Additionally, we have a state-of-the-art gym, weights room and human performance laboratory, in addition to an indoor 3G AstroTurf training facility and a sports halls for classes. We also have a hammer, discus and shot-put cage, a double-ended javelin and a pole vault area.

The Athletics Academy sports include the long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, hammer, javelin, shot-put, discus, hurdling, sprints from 60 m to 400 m, middle-distance running from 800 m to 1500 m and long-distance races including 3000 m, 5000 m and 10,000 m, in addition to a cross-country competition during the winter season.
