Job Reference 1807921Level 3 Commercial Administration ApprenticeRenishaw is looking for two Commercial Apprentices to join the organisation in September 2021. Alternative start dates can be discussed with candidates at the assessment/interview stage. The successful candidate will study towards a Level 3 Business Administration and have the opportunity to progress to Level 4 or above in a range of areas.

Apprenticeship Summary

The apprentices will work within a variety of key corporate functions which may include Marketing Communications, Purchasing/Procurement and Sales before specialising in their chosen area.

Duties include a range of activities in line with the Diploma in Business Administration curriculum:

  • Producing business documents
  • Developing and delivering presentations
  • Analysing and presenting business data
  • Chairing and leading meetings
  • Participating in a range of projects
  • Creating and managing a tender

Examples of specific tasks include (these will vary between placements):

Marketing Communications:

This placement enables apprentices to support Group Marketing and its various functions of Digital Marketing, Content Marketing, Sales Enablement and Events. The apprentices will gain valuable marketing knowledge and skills through:

  • Email marketing
  • Social media marketing
  • Online and offline content development
  • Desktop publishing
  • Marketing automation
  • Analytics and Reporting


This placement enables apprentices to gain a good understanding or ERP and order management system (used in multiple areas of the business) and to learn useful negotiation and project management skills. Some of the tasks involved include:

  • Sourcing and identification of potential suppliers
  • Negotiation of prices, supplier contracts and deliverables
  • Placement of purchase orders & expediting delivery
  • Management of supplier relationships & performance
  • Ownership of Procure2Pay process and ensuring supplier payment


This placement enables apprentices to acquire knowledge of our key product lines and ERP systems whilst developing customer service and communication skills.  Some of the tasks involved include:

  • Sales order processing
  • Producing quotes
  • Following up sales leads
  • Conducting customer service surveys via telephone
  • Liaising with external account managers

Working week:
Hours of work: 08.30 – 17.15 Monday to Friday and 08.30 – 13.30 on Friday. These are core hours and due to the nature of the position these may vary.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working in a customer service environment
  • Experience with the following software packages: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following software packages would be an advantage: MS Outlook, Sage CRM, InDesign, Photoshop

Personal qualities

  • The ideal applicant will have a proactive and mature approach as they will often be working on projects which require confidentiality
  • The ability to work on their own initiative
  • The person in this role must be able to work independently and as part of a team
  • The role is likely to require some evening and weekend work if events require it, so flexibility will be required

Desired qualifications

  • A minimum of five GCSE 4/C-9/A* passes including maths and English (or equivalents) are essential
  • Post GCSE qualifications or study would be advantageous (but not essential)

Future prospects

There is an opportunity to progress onto Level 4 and higher qualifications in a range of areas including AAT Accounting, Project Management, Procurement, Marketing, Business and Management depending on the candidate and the requirements of the business.

There will also be opportunities for placements within other areas of the business, including human resources, sales administration and finance, and duties in these areas will support the requirements of the qualifications.

Things to consider

A full UK driving licence is essential as the role will involve travel to other sites and events.

As the successful apprentice you will undertake:

  • Advanced Apprenticeship in Business Administration

The Apprenticeship will be delivered by a South Gloucestershire & Stroud College Assessor. You will be required to attend Stroud Campus to complete any underpinning knowledge support, however the majority of your assessments towards your qualifications will be undertaken within the workplace environment.

You will be assigned a supervisor/mentor within the workplace, who will support you to develop your workplace skills, knowledge and experience throughout the duration of your apprenticeship programme.
