Summary

As an apprentice, you will provide the highest level of care, ensuring the individual needs and safety of the children are identified and met, whilst maintaining a playful and caring attitude and atmosphere. You will be supported by your colleagues and senior members of the preschool team.

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

Main Duties

  • To learn how to plan, prepare and participate in a range of activities that promote each child’s physical, intellectual, and emotional needs, and encourage linguistic and social interaction between the children and their carers.
  • To learn how to be responsible for a group of children, by observing, monitoring, and accurately recording each child’s development in line with the curriculum planning of ‘The Early Years Foundation Stage’.
  • To attend parent evenings / open days as required, and learn to communicate with parents, carers about the day-to-day needs of the children by fostering parental involvement and encouraging positive parenting skills.
  • To learn how to promote the philosophy of ‘learning through play’.
  • To learn how to help children acquire self-help skills, including dressing, feeding, toilet training, and an awareness of personal hygiene.
  • To ensure that all children are treated as unique individuals with respect and full consideration, in line with the Childcare Centres Equal Opportunities Policy.
  • To attend staff and team meetings as appropriate.
  • To learn about ensuring the environment meets safety and hygiene requirements.
  • To learn about the Children, Act 1989 and other statutory requirements.
  • To learn how to maintain records and documentation that, comply with statutory requirements.
  • To learn how to respond to Child Protection Policy and Confidentiality.
  • To undertake the apprenticeship training including NVQ in Childcare, Certificate in Childcare and Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number.

Your training plan

Level 3 Early Years Educator standard.

Apprentices must successfully complete a Level 3 Early Years Educator qualification. Please refer to the DfE list of approved EYE qualifications:

Apprentices without Level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking their end point assessment. For those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement, the apprenticeships English and maths minimum requirements are Entry Level 3, and the British Sign Language qualification is an alternative to English qualifications for apprentices for whom this is their primary language.

Apprentices must successfully complete a paediatric first aid qualification in line with the requirements of the EYFS Framework (Annex A): Early years foundation stage (EYFS) statutory framework - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).

You will be required to complete Functional Skills mathematics and English (where applicable), Employment Rights and Responsibilities and British Values.

As part of the application process- you still need to complete Maths and English assessments and pre-Interview with SGS college.

Location: South Gloucestershire and Stroud College - Filton Campus.

Duration: 18-24 months.
