Covid Update

On Tuesday 29 March, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Sajid Javid, set out the next steps for living with COVID-19 in England from Friday 1 April.

Updated guidance advises:

  • Adults with the symptoms of a respiratory infection, and who have a high temperature or feel unwell, should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people until they feel well enough to resume normal activities and no longer have a high temperature.
  • Children and young people who are unwell and have a high temperature should stay at home and avoid contact with other people. They can return to college when they no longer have a high temperature, and are well enough to attend.
  • Adults with a positive COVID-19 test result should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 5 days, which is when they are most infectious. For children and young people aged 18 and under, the advice is 3 days.

For education and childcare settings from Friday 1 April:

  • Regular asymptomatic testing is no longer recommended in any education or childcare setting, including in SEND, alternative provision and children’s social care settings. Therefore, we will no longer be able to order test kits .

SGS College was honoured to welcome Metro Mayor Dan Norris yesterday, who visited the institution's cutting-edge campus, SGS Horizon, as part of the ground-breaking 'Skills Connect' initiative.

SGS Horizon, which officially opened in February, stands as a beacon of excellence for the education and training of construction apprentices. Its state-of-the-art facilities and unwavering commitment to nurturing talent have already made it a key player in the advancement of vocational education in the region.

Metro Mayor Dan Norris, a driving force behind the visionary 'Skills Connect' initiative, is steadfast in his mission to bridge the skills gaps within the construction and renewable energy sectors. During his visit, Mayor Norris engaged with the bright young minds at SGS Horizon, delving into their aspirations, their outlook on the industry's future, and their perspectives on the current state of the sector.

In reflecting on his visit, Mayor Norris remarked,

"It has been an absolute pleasure to witness these exceptionally talented individuals honing crucial skills that will undoubtedly enhance our quality of life and open up new opportunities for all of us. Their dedication is a testament to the bright future ahead for the construction and renewable energy industries."

“It was wonderful to see Dan Norris at SGS Horizon again and for our apprentices to have the opportunity to speak to him about their journey. Dan met several learners developing skills in bricklaying, carpentry, property maintenance and plumbing. SGS staff also enjoyed showing Dan the operational facilities now the campus is fully open. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of 'Skills Connect' on the region and recruitment of future SGS Horizon learners.”
