SGS Bristol Academy of Sport Netball Academy hosts the Avon Junior Netball Tournament

On Sunday 30th April the SGS Bristol Academy of Sport Netball Academy hosted the Avon Junior Netball Tournament at Bradley Stoke Community School, organised by Netball Academy Head Coach, Lara Gulotta, College Sport Maker, Ali Chodkiewicz and some of the Academy team.

With 28 teams entering across three age groups, (under 12s, under 14s and under 16s), it was set to be an exciting day. The under 12s and under 14s were the early birds who kicked off the morning session.

Annie Hazell, A Level student and Netball Academy player, ran the under 12s tournament with precision, ensuring all games ran on time and that all scores were submitted.  This age group saw Almondsbury take the win with Bradley Stoke as runners up.  Abbey Cox, Academy Captain, coached our very own Bristol Academy Junior under 14s and also umpired throughout the day.  The efforts of Abbey and her team resulted in a 3rd place group finish but unfortunately this wasn’t enough to get them to the semi-final, which saw Royals take on Crossbow and Bath Cougars face Imperial. The tension increased when the latter game was forced into extra time after ending in a draw but Imperial rose to the challenge and secured their place in the final against Royals. Unfortunately, that is where their winning streak ended with Royals crowned under 14s winners.

With the weather closing in for the afternoon, the under 16s tentatively took to the courts. The big contenders of the day made it to the semi-finals which saw Almondsbury face Bath Cougars and Romans play Team Bath. With the rain just about holding off, the final played out with Almondsbury against Team Bath. Already reeling from their under 12s win, Almondsbury also took the under 16s title. College Academy Coach, Lara Gulotta said of the day, “It was a real success. We saw some great netball throughout the day and luckily the rain held off just long enough for all the teams to complete their games.”
