Former student participating in new hit BBC show

Former SGS College art foundation student, Niamh Wimperis, is participating in new BBC show, The Victorian House of Arts and Crafts.

As described by the BBC, this landmark living history series sees a late 1800s Victorian arts and crafts commune in the Welsh hills painstakingly brought back to life as a group of 21st-century crafters move in to experience the highs and lows of living and working together as a creative commune. Over their month-long stay they are set to renovate four of the key rooms in the house.

During the four-part series, the presenters accompany six craft experts as they practice the arts and crafts formerly used by the likes of William Morris, John Ruskin and Gertrude Jekyll. Each episode, the experts must learn different but notable key skills such as wallpaper printing, furniture building and ceramic designing.

In the first episode the six crafters were faced with the challenge of breathing life back into the Victorian parlour. Using original Victorian tools and techniques, they create arts and crafts objects including a Sussex chair, CR Ashbee bowl and William Morris-inspired wallpaper - all from scratch and all in a week.

Niamh is from an artistic family and her father is a stained glass and light designer. She started embroidering when she was a waitress and had long periods of time between her shifts; she also found the craft a really helpful way to calm her anxiety. When Niamh first began embroidering she was politically motivated, and liked to incorporate a lot of feminist views into her work.

Niamh’s former teacher, John Stadnicki said:

“It’s always a delight to see our former students go out into the world and demonstrate just how talented they are. I remember Niamh being a hard worker who was especially good at weaving. Well done Niamh and good luck, from all of us at SGS College!"
