Andy Lewis gets the Gold at Para-triathlon World Championships

SGS learner Andy Lewis, won gold as Great Britain secured eight medals at the Para-triathlon World Championships Grand Final in Rotterdam, Friday 15 September.

Despite Lewis proclaiming: “It was really tough out there with those conditions,” the PT2 Paralympic champion won by more than a minute.

Andy, who recently enrolled at SGS to study the FdSc Physical Education and Fitness course, lost his leg as a result of an accident with a 38 tonne lorry when he was just sixteen.

Andy won the Paralympic triathlon PT2 Gold medal in Rio last year and is aiming to defend his title at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020.

Kieron Smith, SGS Head of Strength & Conditioning, states: “Andy has been benefiting from strength and conditioning training at the WISE Campus gym over the summer. He has made great progress, especially considering he got knocked off his bike in July and was in hospital.”

Richard Gwyn, SGS TEAMS Co-ordinator, said: “Congratulations to Andy on this great achievement. We look forward to supporting Andy over the next few years in his build up to the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.”

SGS TEAMS supports talented athletes in any sport not covered by the SGS Sports Academies programme including mentoring, strength & conditioning, physiotherapy and performance lifestyle workshops.
