Foreword

SGS is a strong, successful regional college. We take tremendous pride in our reputation and have a track record as a responsive, forward-thinking education and training provider, meeting the needs of learners and employers within our immediate community and beyond.

We constantly strive to raise the profile of academic and vocational education and training and we put employability at the heart of our ambitions and plans for learners. Meeting the local needs of learners and employers is important to us, as well as providing Higher Education that has an economic benefit for both Gloucestershire and the West of England.

We recognise we could, and should, be doing more at Levels 4-6 to respond to the demand of our own Level 3 provision to respond to the low participation rates in HE in the area, and to address gaps in the market for Higher Apprenticeships. We recently conducted a strategic review which determined that we should explore a partnership with a HEI rather than just grow our own provision organically.

We concluded that the optimum route to future-proof the teaching and learning that SGS College provides is to consider a strong relationship with a HEI.

The Partnership

This would seize the opportunity to combine our strengths with those of a like-minded organisation wishing to grow HE provision in Bristol especially – which is recognized as an area which has low HE participation rates - through access to parts of our £100m estate, whilst, in turn, leaning on the extensive experience and expertise in skills, apprenticeships and vocational training already provided by the College to respond proactively to the Higher Level Apprenticeships and Skills required in today’s economy.

This partnership will allow SGS College and its HE partner to maximise learning opportunities, explore and capitalise on growth areas, realise resource efficiencies and embrace innovation, while maintaining a clear focus on high-quality teaching and learning in each other’s areas of expertise.

We are keen to build on what we have already achieved by forming a partnership that will lead the way in meeting the needs of the economy of one of the most dynamic areas of the country outside of London. We are actively pursuing a potential relationship and invite interested parties to submit their Expressions of Interest based on the outline contained within this Prospectus.

About

SGS College is a successful, strong, regional General Further Education College with a rich mix of Further and Higher Education. We are dedicated to expanding and developing academic, vocational, technical, professional and higher level skills within the communities we serve.

It is our wish that more young people, parents, and employers especially, see vocational training and education as a sound alternative to the traditional academic route. We believe that vocational training and education can, and does, provide young people with the critical employment skills necessary for work and life. We are passionate about the development of tomorrow’s workforce and will work tirelessly with businesses to achieve this.

SGS College delivers at six campuses: Filton A38 Campus, West of England Institute of Specialist Education (WISE), Bristol Zoological Gardens, Royal West of England Academy, Stroud and Berkeley.

SGS College has also established a wholly-owned company, SGS Commercial Services Limited. This company is responsible for the Berkeley site, a former nuclear laboratory. It acts as the landlord and development vehicle for the 111-acre site, which has 350,000ft2 of accommodation that will be commissioned over the medium term.

Further, SGS College sponsors the SGS Academy Trust which currently runs three schools:

Combined, the three elements are referred to as the SGS ‘group’ or ‘family’.

The Aim of the SGS ‘Family’

Our common aim is to promote social mobility through the power of education and training. To do this, we need to understand what the issues are, identify the key drivers to effect change and then provide the right curriculum and support systems at every stage of a person’s development and ensure the physical and human resources are best-of-breed.

We wish to provide a lifetime of consistently outstanding provision across primary, secondary, tertiary, HE, Professional, and for adult ‘second-chancers’.
