Athletics Academy students help Wales to victory in Relay

Three students from SGS College aided the Welsh Women’s relay team to victory on Sunday.

At the Under 20’s Welsh Athletics Indoor International, held at National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cardiff, three members of the victorious Welsh Women’s 4 by 200 metre relay team were from the SGS Athletics Academy – Katie-Jane Priest, Melissa Roberts and Emily Wright.

The fourth member of the relay team, Amelia Reynolds, has applied to be a student at the College in September. The Welsh team beat both England teams in a time of 1:39.55.

Further success for the students at the event included Melissa Roberts finishing second in the 60 metres in a time of 7.67 and Katie-Jane Priest was sixth in a time of 7.86.

Emily Wright was second in the long jump with a personal best of 6.19 metres. This performance in the long jump qualifies her to compete at the World Youth Championships which take place in Colombia between 15th & 19th July

Jacob Spence who is also part of the SGS Athletics Academy and is studying BTEC Business gained his first England vest and finished 2nd in the 60 metre hurdles in a time of 8.29.

Richard Gwyn, SGS Athletics Coach said: “It’s great to see so many of our current and future SGS Athletics Academy students performing well indoors at international level. Their form bodes well for the forthcoming outdoor season.”
